If you know a bit about sustainable fashion, you will most likely have heard of People Tree. The London based fashion brand is one of the pioneers when it comes to Fair trade and ethical, sustainable fashion, and the brand can be proud to say they never comprise the people in the supply chain or our planet for their products. Founded by Safia Minney more than twenty years ago, the company has had great success focusing on creating an alternative to fast fashion, by working closely with Fair Trade and artisans, to create garments that are hand crafted in organic cotton and sustainable materials, using traditional skills that support rural communities.

For a long time, I have wanted to buy something from People Tree, simply because I love their values. Unfortunately, I have never found that perfect piece that fits my style and was missing in my wardrobe. Until last week, in Brighton, in the FAIR boutique (which I first mentioned yesterday in the Swedish Stockings brand feature). The boutique had quite a wide selection of People Tree garments, and while most of it was not for me (loving black, grey and white, most of it was just too colorful), I quickly eyed this black casual jumper in 100% organic cotton and there was no doubt about it. It had to come home with me. Because it’s black and loose fitted it fits with almost everything in my wardrobe, and I’ve already worn it with dresses and my black skinny jeans for days out and about, and with my yoga pants for lazy evenings on the couch. While I always say you should never buy anything unless you love it 100%, I’m not entirely sure I would have gotten this jumper had it not been from People Tree. Nevertheless, I’m positive it will be a stable in my wardrobe for years, simply because I love that it was produced according to People Tree’s standards and we really need more standards like that in the fashion industry. Supporting brands like People Tree will undoubtedly help move other brands in the right direction, it’s a small step, but at least it’s in the right direction.
